Venice…. Here and gone?
My favorite “travel” book of all, and moreover one of my favorite books of any sort, is Jan Morris’s Venice. If you have lived in or visited Venice, this book gives you the essence of that remarkable city’s history, how the city came to be, and why it is still to this day an essential example of what the human endeavor can do. If you have not been there, this book will bring Venice to you.
But the city is in deep trouble. Global warming could destroy it within the next fifty years. To get an understanding of how this could happen, and how the city could be saved, I recommend PBS’s Nova program titled Saving Venice.
Read Venice to see what the place is. Watch Saving Venice to understand how threatened it is. And…for a special musical pleasure, tune into Venice Classic Radio. Pure ecstasy, this station will make even more heart-felt your wish to save the most precious city in the world.
