“The Post-Roe Era Begins”…wise words from Bari Weiss.
_____
Sebastian Barry’s wonderful novel The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty tells of a Catholic Irishman who, before the Irish Civil War of 1922, makes the poor decision to join the peelers. The British-run police force in Ireland, with many Catholics in the ranks, the peelers were targeted by Irish Republican forces, and frequently murdered…Irish-born officers especially. Eneas McNulty’s decision is not a wise one, although he is really more naïve than anything else. But the death sentence that is pronounced upon him by the I.R.A. causes him to have to run…which he does, all over the world. This is a tour-de-force of Irish colloquial language and gorgeous expression. In Barry’s notable hands, the novel sings, despite its telling of war, murder, and exile.
